Learning to fly
(or seeking an advanced rating) includes studying for and passing one
or more FAA ground knowledge tests. Dominion Aviation administers 70
different FAA tests for certifications and ratings from Sport Pilot
through Airline Transport Pilot.
Studying for an
FAA Aeronautical Knowledge Test
Three common ways
of studying are:
-
Attending a
scheduled ground school
-
Home study program
using books, CD ROM's or DVD's in conjunction with your instructor
-
Private study in
conjunction with your instructor
All use a study
format specially designed for your particular test. As to which way
is best suited to your needs depends on many factors, such as how and
when you choose to study. In all cases, your instructor will provide
additional information before each flight lesson.
For the private
pilot license and instrument rating, Dominion Aviation (DAS)
recommends attending one of our ground schools taught by our own
professional staff of instructors. These classes are held at
Chesterfield County Airport every two to three months. Each ground
school is tailored to providing more than just the basic information
required to pass the test. They provide an opportunity for asking
questions and for exchanging ideas with other students. Graduates
receive the required logbook entries for ground instruction and for
taking the FAA knowledge test.
Whichever way you
choose, DAS recommends that you study for the ground knowledge test
right from the start and take the FAA test sooner rather than later.
Doing it this way, gives you a head start in your flight training.
Taking an FAA
Aeronautical Knowledge Test
LaserGrade is one
of the largest American-owned and operated computer-based testing
networks. DAS is a LaserGrade test center for FAA aeronautical
knowledge tests. The test center is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and
Fridays. You should make an appointment a few days ahead to be
certain but walk-ins may be accommodated subject to availability.
The LaserGrade
system is very "user-friendly." Before the actual test
begins, you will answer 17 fictional questions to get used to the
computer format. Charts and graphs are provided on screen as well as
in a supplement, similar to that used in your studies. There is even
a flight computer on screen equivalent to an electronic E6B, in case
your batteries fail.
An authorization
is required to take most FAA tests. For private pilot and instrument
ratings, authorization is usually a sign-off from your flight or
ground instructor.
Please note that
an original sign-off is required - copies cannot be accepted. Once
the test has been completed, your score will be computed immediately.
Your test certificate will be issued then and there!
Re-testing after
failure, or in an effort to achieve a higher score, is permitted
subject to specific conditions that are available on request.
